Bocagrande vs El Laguito: Which End of the Beach?

7 min read · October 23, 2026

Bocagrande and El Laguito are one peninsula, but they do not feel the same. What the beach, the noise, the buildings and the distances are like at each end, and which trip each one suits.

If you have already decided on a beach apartment in Cartagena, one question remains that booking sites do not answer: Bocagrande or El Laguito? On a map they look like the same place, because they are two consecutive stretches of one peninsula. In practice they feel different, and that difference can make or break a week of holiday.

This guide compares only those two ends. If you are still torn between the beach and the walled city, start with our guide to where to stay in Cartagena and come back once you have picked the beach side.

How the two relate to each other

Bocagrande is the strip of towers directly across the bay from the Old City. The newspaper El Universal puts it about a 20-minute walk from the historic centre. El Laguito sits at the far end, on the edge of Bocagrande, and takes its name from the lagoon around it. Between the two it is only a few minutes on foot, by taxi or by public transport.

So choosing one does not lock you into it: from El Laguito you can walk or take a short taxi to the restaurants and supermarkets of Bocagrande, and from Bocagrande you can reach El Laguito for a sunset. What changes is where you sleep and what you find when you step out the door.

Bocagrande: the busier side

Bocagrande is the urban stretch. Avenida San Martín concentrates shops, cafés and restaurants, and in a single walk you find banks, shopping centres, stores and many hotels. It is the part of the peninsula where you can get the most done on foot without ordering a taxi.

The beach is the more active one too. El Universal mentions access from Calle Primera, tent rental, vendors selling ceviche and fresh fruit, and volleyball at sunset. A study from the maritime authority (DIMAR) describes the Bocagrande beach as wide, more than 50 metres. The study is undated, so treat it as a general reference, not a measurement for today.

The flip side is the one you expect: more traffic, more people, more noise. A housing guide aimed at people relocating to the area names avenue noise as the main complaint in Bocagrande, and says street-facing apartments tend to be the cheapest. That is one source and one opinion, but it matches what you hear walking along San Martín on a Friday night.

El Laguito: calmer, more hotels

El Laguito is the quieter end. El Universal describes a relaxed area with the lagoon alongside, where people fish and children fly kites at sunset. The beach lies in front of several large hotels and is the place for water sports, with jet skis and inflatable bananas a few metres from shore.

Day to day, the calm comes at the price of distance from services. The same housing guide notes that banks, clinics and big supermarkets are a few minutes away in Bocagrande, and that nightlife is minimal. Those are one author's observations with no official source, but they fit the shape of the area: small, with big towers and little neighbourhood retail.

On buildings, that guide says El Laguito is mostly 1980s and 1990s construction, with generous space but older infrastructure, while Bocagrande has more recent towers. That is a generalisation, and every building differs, so ask about air conditioning, wifi and lifts before you book.

Which one has the better beach?

Both are urban bay beaches: grey-to-brown sand and water that is not turquoise. They are fine for a swim, a walk and a sunset, but they are not the postcard Caribbean. The white sand and clear water are at Playa Blanca and the Rosario Islands, a day trip away.

Here is an honest limit: we found no source that directly compares waves or water quality between Bocagrande and El Laguito, so we will not tell you one is better for swimming. What is documented is that the sea can reshape these beaches. In November 2023 a swell took much of the sand from beaches in Bocagrande that had just been worked on, with waves of up to about 2.5 metres according to the consortium in charge, which said the retreat matched what its models expected.

For you, that means beach width is not constant. It depends on the season, the swell and the protection works. If a wide beach is the point of your trip, look at recent photos and ask your host how it looks on your dates.

Which to choose for your trip

  • First time in Cartagena and you want to do everything: Bocagrande. More restaurants and services nearby, and the Old City is a short ride away.
  • Family with children who wants beach and pool: El Laguito often works better for the calm, though check what is within walking distance of each building.
  • Long stay or remote work: Bocagrande, for the services at hand and the newer buildings, but confirm the apartment's internet connection.
  • Quiet couple's getaway: El Laguito, in an apartment away from the avenue.
  • You like nightlife and walking home: neither. Look at the Centro or Getsemaní.

Getting between the two and to the Old City

Between Bocagrande and El Laguito, walking or a short taxi is enough. To the Old City, a taxi or ride-hailing app is the norm, and Cartagena taxis have no meter, so agree the fare before you get in. Off-peak it is roughly 10 to 15 minutes and noticeably more at rush hour, with the bottleneck on Avenida San Martín. These are approximate figures.

Before you book

Decide the rhythm of the trip first and the area second: movement and services at hand in Bocagrande, calm and beachfront hotels in El Laguito. And remember the building and the side of the apartment matter more than the neighbourhood name. Every formal accommodation in Colombia asks for your passport for guest registration, so do not be surprised if your host requests it.

We have apartments in both Bocagrande and El Laguito. If you tell us your dates, how many are travelling and what kind of trip you want, we will say honestly which end suits you. Figures in this article are approximate and conditions change, so verify what matters before you travel.
